The man was sentenced to six years in prison and 600 lashes for sodomy charges. The defendant, a shopkeeper, admitted to raping a 12-year-old boy of Arab nationality who had come to buy items from the shop where he worked in Riyadh, according to local newspapers on Tuesday.

The father of the boy brought the case to the attention of the police who then launched an investigation.

The defendant said he was in hiding for 3 days after abusing the boy. He then requested his sponsor for an exit visa so that he could make a quick trip to his home country to see his “ailing mother” who wanted to see him. His plan, reportedly failed after the police tracked him down. Sodomy is an offence that is punishable by death in the Kingdom.
