The telecom regulatory authority in Saudi Arabia, CITC denied rumors that have been making the rounds on Twitter that it would block WhatsApp, reported AlArabiya. CITC said that any updates on the topic would be announced officially.
According to a report published in the Arabic daily, Al-Hayat newspaper, CITC was planning to block WhatsApp service shortly after discussions with the American organization regarding compliance issues fell through.
Some sources have pointed out the seriousness of the issue of compliance with the Kingdom’s regulations. The nature of interest of messaging applications including WhatsApp, Viber, and Skype is under question as these applications offer their services for free and yet feature no advertisements, normally is a main source of income.
