A court in Riyadh has handed down the death sentence to an Ethiopian housemaid for the murder of a 6-year-old girl, a crime that rocked the capital city a few months ago.
Judge Sheikh Ahmed bin Saad Askar announced the death verdict on Monday at a court in the Saudi capital. He added that the maid could appeal against the death sentence within the next 30 days.
The victim, 6-year-old Lamees, was the daughter of the maid’s employer. Back in June this year, the 26-year-old maid killed the child by slitting her throat with a sharp knife. According to local papers, the maid confessed to murdering the girl in retaliation of her being mistreated by her employer. The maid’s sponsor, however, denied any ill treatment from the family’s part.
The father of the child, Mohammad Al Salman thanked the Almighty and expressed his relief on hearing the judgement for the person responsible for his innocent child’s death.
Many tragic and gruesome incidents involving domestic helpers were reported in the kingdom earlier this year.
