Major Muhammad Al-Hamadi, spokesman for the Riyadh Civil Defense said that the upper floor of the 2-storeyed apartment in Al-Uraija district house was in flames around 1 am and Civil Defense teams arrived by 1:21 AM.
Al-Hamadi said that 8 rescue teams, 3 fire brigades, and 3 ambulance teams were involved in controlling the fire. Six members of the family were rescued and taken to the hospital for medical aid. He said that one of the injured suffered severe burns to the face, but added that her condition was stable. Unfortunately, the smoke claimed six lives of the 12-member family.
Initial investigations revealed that the fire started in a room where the family slept. The cause of the fire was not ascertained. However, after close examination they learned that the furniture, mostly made of sponge, quickened the spreading of smoke and fire in the apartment. He said that preliminary examination indicated that the deaths and the injuries were the result of suffocation.
