iOS7Apple has finally released its latest OS, the iOS 7. A free update of the software has become available since this morning, around 3 months after the new OS was announced. Unlike the previous updates, Apple has given a complete overhaul with its new iOS 7.

The best thing for Apple fans is that they don’t have to buy the latest Apple device to enjoy the new features. Apple users can install the free updates on their devices, that is, if the device is iPhone 4 or later, iPad 2 or later, and fifth-generation iPod touch.

To download iOS 7 on your device:

According to online technology news site, Mashable, there is a 3-GB free space pre-requisite for downloading and updating iOS 7. Reports from CNET state that the update itself is around 650 MB on iPhone 4 and iPad2.

There are two ways to download the update:

  • On your iPhone of iPad, visit Settings > General > Software Update. You will be able to download iOS 7.

  • You can also plug your device into iTunes. Click iTunes > Check for Updates, a prompt appears asking whether you want to download the new OS version.

According to CNET, iTunes update is a lot faster than the over-the-air option. It takes about an hour to download and install iOS 7 via iTunes. According to one iPhone user, the installation took over 4 hours to complete.

A note of caution before you install iOS7 on your device. Considering it is a system update, it would be ideal to manually back up your data prior to the installation. This way, you can be assured that your files are not lost in the event of a problem during the upgrade.
