MERS virusThe total number of MERS cases reported globally has reached 102, reported Gulf News. In Saudi Arabia, eight people have been recently reported with MERS coronavirus infection.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO) almost half the patients who contracted the virus have died. Of the 102 confirmed infections, 49 people have died of the infection. UAE reported its first MERS-death when an 82-year-old Emirati died of the infection.

The symptoms of the infection are coughing, fever and pneumonia. MERS infections were first seen in Saudi Arabia last year. The infection was reported in other GCC countries and in France, Germany, Italy, Tunisia and Britain.

While WHO has not suggested travel limitations, it has travelers to be vigilant of the infection. People who experience severe respiratory infections after their visit to the Middle East are urged to test for the MERS virus as a precaution.
