watania-chickenChicken products of the Saudi brand Al-Watania have been ordered off the shelves of Qatar stores after some of the chicken was found to be contaminated, making it unfit for human consumption.

The poultry products are being recalled after salmonella contamination was reported in some of the products. All Al-Watania products at Qatar ports have been banned from entering the country, and import of the brand’s products has been stopped until further notice, reported Sabq news.

According to Hamad al-Malki, Doha Municipality chief of food inspection, the tainted chicken products have been withdrawn from most supermarkets and retail outlets. The order to withdraw the products came after test results came positive for contamination. The poultry is believed to have become tainted at the production side in Saudi.

According to Qatar daily, Gulf Times, the Doha Municipality authorities have recalled only fresh chicken products, and that the frozen chicken and eggs from Al-Watania were safe for consumption. Another Qatar daily, Doha news reported that the Doha municipality authorities have advised customers who already purchased the tainted product “to return it to the store.” In Saudi Arabia, so far there have been no contamination or salmonella reports concerning Al-Watania products.
