The Saudi Shura Council, the body that advises the government on new laws, has recommended changing the country’s official weekend to Friday and Saturday to boost the economy, local media reported on Monday.
83 members voted in favour and 41 against the change recommended by the legislative and consultative body on Monday. The shift will also require approval from the Council of Ministers before it gets implemented. It is uncertain when this change would be made effective to workers in the public sector.
Oman recently made the switch to Friday – Saturday weekend, leaving Saudi Arabia as the only GCC country to have the weekend on Thursday – Friday.
It is hoped that this decision will help trade between Saudi and other Arab countries as well the international business community.
