umrahUmm Al-Qura University has launched a new application that allows pilgrims to count their Tawaf rounds during Umrah and Hajj.

The application “Tawaf” is available for download on smartphones. It counts the number of times a pilgrim completes a round around the Ka’aba. Once all seven rounds of circumambulation are over, the application alerts the pilgrim that they have completed their Tawaf.

The application also has an option to send information related to pilgrim movement to servers at the Central Technical Innovation at Umm Al-Qura University. This data can later be used to study Tawaf flow and traffic and also to provide statistics for peak timing, reported Al Arabiya.

According to Dr Saleh Bislamah, Deputy Manager at the Innovation Center in the University, the application uses GPS technology, along with the help of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, to detect a pilgrim’s movement around the Holy Ka’aba. He also explained that the application is a product of the HajjSense project at the Technical Innovation Center for Geographic Information. The project aims to help collect necessary information to provide better services to pilgrims.
