The self-service system is currently operational only at checkout counters that serve shoppers with 10 or fewer items. This introductory phase lets customers familiarize the entire self-checkout process.
Unlike traditional counters that are manned by cashiers, shoppers scan purchase items on their own at the self-checkout counters. Additionally, surveillance cameras will monitor these counters. The new system is expected to significantly ease bottlenecks at cash counters, reported Akhbaar24. Many shoppers in the capital city have shown interest in the new system while many others expressed their concerns over loss of jobs and increase in unemployment.
The news report did not mention the name of the store or the mall in which the self-checkout system was introduced.
