Thousands of protesters have flocked back to Istanbul’s Taksim Square after voluntarily cleaning up the aftermath of clashes. Turkish PM Erdogan meanwhile called the protesters “marauders” and stressed he will not give in to pressure.
The protestors, in large numbers, headed to Taksim Square from all directions, joining the already tens-of-thousands-strong crowd with flags and banners. Chanting and singing in unison could be heard, with slogans like “This is our Taksim, this is our Istanbul!” ringing in the air.
The unrest erupted on Friday when trees were torn down at a park in Istanbul’s main Taksim Square under government plans to redevelop the area, but widened into a broad show of defiance against the Islamist-rooted Justice and Development Party (AKP).
