A two-meter wide pipe that supplies desalinated water to the city of Riyadh burst causing water to gush out and flood the area, reported local dailies.
Civil Defense teams in Riyadh began efforts to clear the flooded roads that caused severe traffic jam in the area. According to a tweet by the Riyadh Civil Defense, the breach occurred in a water pipe feeding the city. The Civil Defense is cooperating with several government agencies to repair the damage and stop the flow of water.
Later in the day, the Emir of Riyadh, Prince Turki bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz directed the General Organization for Water Desalination to quickly repair the affected water line from feeder reservoirs (2) of the National Water Company in southern Riyadh.
The governor also directed water tankers to distribute water to the affected neighborhoods free of charge and to increase pumping of water to compensate for the shortfall caused by the burst pipe.
The deputy governor for operations and maintenance, Engineer Usman bin Yahya al-Najdi said that at around 6:45 AM on Wednesday, there was a sudden burst in line feed (2) at Jaber Street, east of the city of Riyadh. He reported that the operations and maintenance teams began urgent work to isolate the breach and drain out the flooded water in order to fix the line. He added that the work will be carried out round the clock till the situation is resolved.
